May 2008 Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend
the 20th Annual National Association of Professional Organizer’s (NAPO)
Conference in Reno, NV. Close to 1000 professional organizers, speakers
and exhibitors joined together to learn from industry leaders and each
other.
The highlight of the conference for me was meeting Peter Walsh, a
regular on TLC’s Clean Sweep and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Peter gave a
wonderful keynote address and I thought I’d share a few of his thoughts
about clutter with you: 1.Close your eyes and visualize you with your
clutter. What do you see? It’s important not to see yourself standing
in your clutter, but on a road going through the clutter. Visualize
what your space will look and feel like at the end of that road.
2.It’s almost never about the stuff. If you focus on the stuff, it’s a
distraction. Instead, use the clutter to tell the story and define your
path out.
3.When decluttering your space, try to take a different perspective
with your things. For example, put yourself in the shoes of someone
that is trying to help you declutter. What would your “decluttered and
organized self” say to assist in the process? As another example, if
you are feeling an emotional attachment to something from your past,
ask yourself why you are living in the past. Are your best moments in
front of you or behind you?
